INTERIOR STYLING AND SPATIAL DESIGN FOR A BROOKLYN 2 BEDROOM

Bushwick Apartment

This 900 sq ft Brooklyn rental supports two adults, three spirited cats, dual workspaces, and an abundance of plants. We transformed the home through intentional spatial planning, layered textures, and thoughtful color, successfully creating distinct zones while enriching the sense of depth.

Functional

The ask

The clients came to me with clear lifestyle needs: a home that supported work, rest, creativity, and companionship. They needed functional zones for two workstations, ample space for plants, and room for their three cats — all within the limitations of a rental. The budget was zero, so the design relied entirely on existing furniture, thoughtful reconfiguration, and strategic new recommendations the clients could purchase later if they chose to. Every decision had to work within the limitations of a rental and make a meaningful impact without financial investment.

The Challenges

At nine hundred square feet, the apartment required precise spatial thinking. Storage was limited, circulation paths were tight, and multiple functions had to coexist in each room. The lighting was another significant challenge. The unit is west facing, which produced heavy backlighting and left the interior surprisingly dark even during the day. The finishes were neutral but offered little visual depth, and the clients’ mix of belongings needed a clearer sense of order and proportion.

Concept Development and Visual Direction

Our design for their home centered on warmth, definition, and nuance. After an initial walkthrough, we established clear goals for the household: how each family member moves, works, rests, and plays. A curated moodboard grounded our vision, allowing us to translate color, material, and form into a cohesive narrative.

Space Planning and Layout Design

We began by measuring every inch and drafting a blueprint. From there, we reimagined functional arrangements to maximize flow, preserved existing furnishings, and proposing new pieces only where necessary. We walked the clients through each option before move-in, empowering them to follow the plan precisely with confidence.

Digital Renderings

Using images provided by the landlord before our walkthrough, we visualized the space with the selected layout, client furnishings, and wall colors, allowing us to choose paint colors and the backsplash ahead of move-in.

Our Collaborative Result

The finished space feels welcoming and considered. A refined artistic sanctuary that accommodates both the practicalities of everyday life and the clients’ creative spirit. We hired painters to paint selected walls with specific colors prior to move-in and preserved beloved existing items, and added select pieces where needed. All finishes and furnishings were selected to reflect the homeowners’ aesthetic and vibe.
